Ayurveda a science of life

The conceptual & operational framework Ayurveda medicine is one of the worlds oldest holistic healing system.Near about 5000 yrs ago. According to Ayurveda the universe is made of five primodal elements called pancha mahabhuttas namely earth ,air, water ,fire ,& earth. These elements themself are inanimate but in combition give rise to three main biological forces or principles .In human body it is called Doshas & as every human being has a different balance elements.one dosha is typically predominant in our constitution & ascertain our personality. Manifest in the human body as three basic humours known as tridoshas (vata, pitta, kapha). The Ayurveda derived from word “Ayur”means life or life principle & veda which refers to a system of knowledge.literally Ayurveda means a science of knowledge which tells about life.

Basic principle of Ayurveda:
Ayurveda is based on following theories:

1.Pancha mahabhutta theory (Five elements)

2.Tri-dosha theory (Three body humors)

3.Sapta-dhatu theory (seven body tissue)

Pancha mahabhutta theory

Pancha Bhoota, according to Hinduism, is the basis of all cosmic creation. These elements are: Prithvi(Earth), Jal Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air), Aakasha(Space ). These elements have different characteristics and these also account for different faculties of human experience.

The theory of tridosha:

The theory of tridosha : It has been said that the tridosha theory in Ayurveda originated from the theory of the three elements of the universe .The names of these three doshas which are roughly equivalent to humour, are Vata (wind), Pitta (Bile) ,& Kapha (Phlegm/sleshma) individually called DOSHAS & group together as TRIDOSHAS in Ayurveda.

Sapta-dhatu theory:

Ayurveda classifies the human body into seven constituents, or Sapthadhathu. These are the elements in the human body that nourish, grow and support the body and mind. The seven dhatus are:

Rasa Dhatu: Plasma/lymph fluid

Rakta Dhatu: Blood

Mamsa Dhatu: Muscles

Meda Dhatu: Fat

Asthi Dhatu: Bone

Majja Dhatu: Bone marrow

Shukra Dhatu: Reproductive fluid or Semen
